About Us

Guys and Dolls 2011For five decades the Deanery Players have performed successful pantomimes and musicals in Harrogate. Their efforts, over the years, have raised over £20,000 for local charitable organisations, and £5000+ for Saint Michael's Hospice. At a sponsored event in 1975 they earned themselves a place in the Guiness Book of Records, when they made the longest Daisy Chain in the world (3234 feet).

The suggestion to form the Deanery Players came about at a Halloween Party in 1959. Parishioners of St. Robert's RC Church in Harrogate enthusiastically received the idea, and their first pantomime, 'Cinderella' was presented the following year, at Our Lady and St. John Fisher School. An annual pantomime was performed at the venue for six years.

In 1966 they performed 'Red Riding Hood' at Harrogate Theatre- a great success. The following year they made an ambitious move to the Royal Hall and their production of 'Humpty Dumpty' was the first of many spectacular  pantomimes, the high point being 'Cinderella' in 1971 that attracted a record audience of  more than 10,000 over 8 performances!

As well as performing at the Harrogate Theatre and The Royal Hall, the Deanery Players have also taken their pantomimes to Ilkley and Tadcaster, where in conjunction with the respective Round Tables they raised money for  their charities.

A change of policy by the Executive Comittee to produce musical shows rather than pantomime resulted in a return to Harrogate Theatre in 1988. Since then their annual productions have included 'My Fair Lady', 'West Side Story', '42nd Street', 'Jesus Christ Superstar', 'South Pacific', 'Calamity Jane' and 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'.
