"...the happiest show in town." Sunday Express
Bill Snibson, a Lambeth costermonger, is revealed to be the new Earl of Hareford and his newly-discovered aristocratic relations are horrified. Bringing him to Hareford hall, they attempt to educate Bill into the ways of the gentry and to separate him from his cockney girlfriend Sally. The result? Chaos of the most comical kind! With a host of hilarious characters, witty one-liners and several toe-tapping, uplifting songs (including the famous Lambeth Walk, The Sun Has Got His Hat On and Leaning On A Lamppost) Me and My Girl is a sublime and sunny treat for all fans of musical comedy!
This version of the show, with its revised book by Stephen Fry, was first presented at the Leichester Heymarket Theatre in 1985 in a hugely popular production staring Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson which later transferred to the Adelphi Theatre London where it enjoyed an extremely long and successful run.
THIS WEEK IN THE HARROGATE ADVERTISER!
DEANERY SHOW'S REUNION
A SPECIAL reunion may be about to take place during the Deanery Player's next show at Harrogate Theatre.
Its all thanks to an announcement in the Harrogate Advertiser series in September inviting new members to join the Deanery Players for the next month's production of Me and My Girl.
As a result the players' chairman Kath Lunn received a call from Mr Jim Whitehead, now living in Leeds, but an old Harrogatonian. Mr Whitehead told them that in February 1946 Air Cadets from Harrogate and Knaresborough had a sight-seeing holiday in London culminating with a trip to the Victoria Palace Theatre to see Lupino Lane in Me and My Girl.
A few days after this conversation, Kath Lunn received from Mr Whitehead, the original programme for the show, an itinerary of the trip and a photograph of the squad taken near blitz damaged St Bride's Church.
The two officers who organised the visit to London were Flight Lieutenant Scurah and Flying Officer Newsome.
Mr Whitehead would like to hear from any Air Cadet who was on the visit to London and the Deanery Players would be happy to host a reunion at Harrogate Theatre during their production of Me and My Girl from February 9-11
Please contact Kath Lunn on 01423 569951) if you were part of this holiday and would like to meet up with Jim Whitehead.
